Koh Tao for families
The beautiful island of Koh Tao has plenty of different activities that are suitable for those travelling with kids of all ages. No matter if you prefer to stay on dry land or try different water sports like scuba and snorkeling one thing is guaranteed: You wont get bored!
Snorkeling
The tropical waters of the Gulf of Thailand offer things to do for the entire family. Most of the beaches around Koh Tao are well suited for families and a majority of them are great for snorkeling too! You can always find a calm bay to cruise around the colorful reefs without a guide, but especially for beginners we highly recommend booking a guided trip to ensure the safety and finding the best possible spots. On a full day snorkeling trip our experienced guides will take you to the more remote bays, that are hard or impossible to reach by land. A perfect Koh Tao snorkeling experience for families!
Koh Tao Beaches
We have previously written a full article about the best beaches of Koh Tao but here are few of our favourite child friendly options.
Sairee Beach
Sairee is the longest and the most popular amongst the beaches of Koh Tao. Stretching over two kilometers of the west coast of the island Sairee has the perfect conditions for kids to play since it is very shallow and extremely calm for most of the year. There is an abundance of cafes and restaurants to munch your breakfast or lunch and good the shopping options from beach toys to clothing and souvenirs. Koh Tao Divers is located at the quieter south end of the beach.
Shark Bay
One of the most stunning beaches of Koh Tao! It is a popular snorkeling site since you can spot blacktip reef sharks and turtles there frequently. The turquoise water and white sands are ideal for getting to the tropical beach day vibes. The easiest way to reach Shark Bay is to take a taxi or a motorbike (experienced drivers only!) to Haad Thien Beach Resort and follow the signs pointing towards the beach. Other option is to enter from the sea with a traditional thai longtailboat.
Aow Leuk Bay
Located on the east coast of Koh Tao Aow Leuk serves some of the best snorkeling on the island. The colorful coral reefs start from close to the shore and they are full of marine life. You can even spot juvenile black tip reef sharks there seasonally! Aow Leuk has a restaurant, toilets and rustic sun loungers, so you can happily spend an entire beach day there.
Taatoh Lagoon and Freedom Beach
Take a taxi to the south side of Koh Tao and relax on the beach with loads of child friendly activities. With 100THB entrance fee (kids for free) you can access Freedom beach, Taatoh Lagoon and John Suwan view point. With the ticket you can use the facilities, beach games including kayaks for free in Taatoh Lagoon. Take a scenic coastal walk from Taatoh Lagoon to Freedom beach. Both beaches has also restaurant. There is also free taxi back to Sairee daily 6pm.
