The SSI Open Water Diver course is the ultimate beginner’s diving certification, allowing you to dive to 18 meters (60 feet) anywhere in the world. Over three fun-filled days, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge you need while exploring the vibrant coral reefs that make Koh Tao one of the world’s best diving destinations.

Both PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and SSI (Scuba Schools International) are globally recognized and respected certification agencies in the diving world. Choosing between them often comes down to personal preference. Here’s a breakdown of the differences and why it might not matter much in terms of your diving experience, but could affect the overall approach you prefer: Global Recognition: Both PADI and SSI offer certifications that are universally accepted and respected. Whether you choose PADI or SSI, you’ll have no problem diving anywhere in the world. Important Note: Regardless of which agency you choose for your certification, both PADI and SSI recognize each other’s courses. This means that if you start with an SSI Open Water Diver certification, you can easily continue your training at a PADI dive center when you’re ready to advance. The certifications are interchangeable, so you can confidently dive and continue your education no matter where you are.
You don’t need to be an expert swimmer, but you do need basic swimming skills. Being able to float for 10 minutes and swim 200 meters will ensure you’re comfortable in the water. If you're not a confident swimmer, we recommend practicing a bit beforehand to feel at ease.
The minimum age to start the SSI Open Water Diver course on Koh Tao is 10 years old. If you're under 15, you’ll receive a Junior Open Water Diver certification, which can be upgraded to a full certification once you turn 15. There is no upper age limit for diving, as long as you’re in good health.
You don’t need to be an expert swimmer to start your diving course, but basic swimming skills are required. You should be able to float or tread water for 10 minutes and swim 200 meters (or 300 meters using snorkeling equipment). This ensures you are comfortable and safe in the water.
Yes! The SSI Open Water Diver course is designed for complete beginners. No previous diving experience is required. Your instructor will guide you through everything you need to know, from using diving equipment to underwater communication, ensuring you dive safely and confidently.
It’s recommended to book your course in advance, especially during the high season (November to March), to secure your spot. You can easily book online or contact the dive center directly for availability and information.
For your diving course, you’ll need to bring: A swimsuit Sunscreen Towel Personal identification (e.g., passport) A medical questionnaire (if required)
24-Hour Notice: You may reschedule your dive or course without additional fees if you notify us at least 24 hours in advance, subject to availability. No-Show Policy: Failure to attend a booked dive or course within 24 hours of the scheduled time will result in being charged the full price, regardless of the reason, including illness or travel delays. If illness prevents you from attending, we can provide a supporting letter upon request for insurance claims.
